Recently, we were talking to Ryan Ladd, one of our producers. He told us that his dad had been a musician.
He remembered a time when he and his dad were listening to music. He must have been about 8 years old. It was the ACDC song, Back in Black. His dad asked, “Can you hear the guitars? Do they sound distorted?”
8-year-old Ryan focused in on the guitars and said, “No, I think they sound clean.”
His dad replied, “You’re right. Mutt Lange is the producer of this song. He keeps the guitars clean. They’re tight and heavy because everything is so intentional. That’s what makes the song hang together.”
Ryan and his dad had these conversations throughout his life.
Ryan grew up listening to the WHAT, HOW and WHY of song, arrangements, effects, and technology. .
“It takes years to become a master of this craft,” he says. He still works on it every day.
In this Do-It-Yourself time of audio recordings, it’s hard to find a producer who truly knows how to help songwriters “shape” the arrangement of their songs and create professional audio recordings.
There are a lot of rookies out there. But there are also producers, like Ryan, who live and breathe this stuff -- music producers with the artistry to listen to music with the whole arrangement in mind -- and the skill to create a professional audio recording.
